Hydrogen Energy Reservoir

The French Corrosion Institute is a research partner of the European IPCEI project focusing on hydrogen underground storage leaded by the Slovakian group NAFTA. The first progress meeting of the project was held at Bratislava the 19th of September 2024. More information of the project website: https://projecthenri.eu

NH3 Tests

Development of test capabilities in liquid and gasous ammonia and cryogenic temperatures at the French Corrosion Institute – Saint Etienne Site. Several jacketed autoclaves and test cells are available for specimens exposure in liquid amonia below -35°C. Gas NH3 gas permeability at low temperature is also possible. The comissionning of a new test room for ammonia testing is ongoing.

Hydrogen Tests

Commissioning of a new test room dedicated to material testing under hydrogen pressure at The French Corrosion Institute – Saint-Etienne site. New equipments have been invested to extend the pressure range we can investigate, to allow for testing in contaminated gas (mainly in presence of H2S) and offer new test methods applicable in research projects and consultencies. Several test frames are now available : o Several autoclaves for batch exposures up to 300°C/300 bar. o Two test frames for fracture toughness and fatigue crack growth. rate evaluations up to 700 bar and -150/180°C. o Several permeation test cells up to 400 bar. o One test frame for slow strain rate and Ripple load test up to 185 bar. o Cryogenic test using hollow specimens down to -150°C. o Thermodesorption spectroscopy.…

Development in the hydrogen industry

The French Corrosion Institute continues developing R&D and test services for material resistance evaluation under gaseous hydrogen pressure. In addition to our standard test capabilities, we can also adapt to specific requirements and develop “on-demand” test method. In this example, we have produced for one of our client, a “fit-for-purpose” test bench capable to simulate the exposure of tubing to pressure cycles of several tens of bar of hydrogen. The equipment is operated to mimic the real pressure cycle to which the part will be exposed in service. The number of cycles is defined to simulate the full life time of the product and ensure its integrity in service.
